§ The map · Alabama
Alabama was admitted to the Union in 1819.
Its admission left the Senate at eleven free states and eleven slave. The Missouri application arrived weeks later.
Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Alabama residents put the figure at 52.3%. Asked the same people whether they themselves support it, the answer comes back at 18.2%. The distance between what is believed and what is true is 34.1 points, across 1,869 respondents in Alabama.
None of this requires anyone to be lying. It only requires everyone to be sure, and nobody to check.
