There was no wire to the Pacific, so word went by telegraph to St. Louis, by stagecoach to San Francisco, and by paddlewheeler to Portland. Oregon had been a state for twenty-nine days before it heard.
Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Oregon residents put the figure at 58.4%.
