§ The map · Wisconsin
Wisconsin was admitted to the Union in 1848.
The fifth and last state formed under the Northwest Ordinance, which allowed no more than five. Voters rejected the first constitution and passed a second.
Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Wisconsin residents put the figure at 56.3%. Asked the same people whether they themselves support it, the answer comes back at 13.8%. The distance between what is believed and what is true is 42.5 points, across 2,618 respondents in Wisconsin.
The trilogy begins where this gap ends: with people who are certain about each other and wrong.
