§ The map · Florida
Florida was admitted to the Union in 1845.
Admitted on the last full day of Tyler's presidency, in the same act that admitted Iowa. Iowa turned the terms down and took another twenty-one months.
Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Florida residents put the figure at 54.3%. Asked the same people whether they themselves support it, the answer comes back at 19.5%. The distance between what is believed and what is true is 34.8 points, across 10,692 respondents in Florida.
The books ask a smaller question than the news does: what happens at one kitchen table when nobody corrects the number.
