§ The map · Washington
Washington was admitted to the Union in 1889.
Thirty-six years a territory, and eleven more from the first statehood bill to the last. It was to be called Columbia until the House objected.
Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Washington residents put the figure at 58.5%. Asked the same people whether they themselves support it, the answer comes back at 18.4%. The distance between what is believed and what is true is 40.1 points, across 3,353 respondents in Washington.
The books ask a smaller question than the news does: what happens at one kitchen table when nobody corrects the number.
