How Alaska joined the Union

Alaska was admitted to the Union in 1959.

Bought in 1867 and admitted ninety-one years later. For the first seventeen of them it had no civil government at all.

What Alaska gets wrong about itself

Asked how many people in the other party support political violence, Alaska residents put the figure at 54.3%. Asked the same people whether they themselves support it, the answer comes back at 26.6%. The distance between what is believed and what is true is 27.7 points, across 367 respondents in Alaska.

The books ask a smaller question than the news does: what happens at one kitchen table when nobody corrects the number.
